Join James Bryant Conant Award winning governance expert, AJ Crabill and Diana Freeman, Governance Specialist at Diligent, for a conversation about the future of education in the wake of the many crisis events of this spring. They will address many of the different scenarios that are developing as districts navigate the uncharted waters of resuming school after months of closure. The discussion will range from projected budget shortfalls, to socio-emotional wellbeing of children and staff, to goals, parameters, and expectations moving forward. As always, student outcomes and achievement will be the focus of attention as educators approach moving forward incorporating the lessons learned in order to be stronger on the other side.
Board response to current events and their impact on:
- Student socioemotional wellbeing
- Projected budget shortfalls
- Goals, parameters, and expectations moving forward
- Student outcomes and achievement
AJ Crabill currently leads school board governance nationwide at the Council of the Great City Schools (CGCS). Prior to his work at CGCS, he served as a Deputy Commissioner of Education at the Texas Education Agency. Crabill also served eight years on the board of the Kansas City (MO) Public Schools (KCPS). When he was initially elected to the board, Kansas City had the lowest accreditation status of any district in Missouri, was hemorrhaging funds, suffered regular scandals of public corruption and was in general disarray. Crabill led a broad suite of reforms that radically transformed the district resulting in KCPS regaining full accreditation from the state of Missouri for the first time in nearly 30 years.
